In the Plains culture, it is often the
task of the uncles to be the teachers
of the nephews in the way of the
world. They assume the role of
mentor in the boy's training as a
hunter and warrior. These lessons
include physical training, as well as
the skills necessary to survive:
hunting, tracking, acts of war,
building weapons and physical
stamina. The boy's father then can
take on a wholly different role...that
of spiritual and family guide.
